These Days Before the Vote: "Each person possesses an inviolability founded on justice."
Whitewater, Wis. — Sunday evening here in Wisconsin continues These Days Before the Vote, a series addressing, each day before the November election, a principle or position on which our liberal democratic tradition rests.
Rawls writes that "Each person possesses an inviolability founded on justice that even the welfare of society as a whole cannot override." John Rawls, A Theory of Justice 3 (rev. ed. 1999).
There is no inviolability in authoritarian populism save perhaps that of the leader, who places himself above and beyond justice.
There, in these words of Rawls, as in so many other reasoned understandings of justice, lies the reason we oppose, resist, and fight against the malevolent MAGA movement that afflicts this beautiful nation.
